​Certificate II in Arboriculture

​Qualification Description

This qualification provides occupation outcomes with knowledge and skills to undertake a range of ground-based tree work activities and as a pathway for further learning required for tree workers in the arboriculture industry.

​Core Units

​NOTE: Units marked with an asterisk (*) require completion of prerequisite Unit/s which is identified after the Unit.
  • Work safely in the construction industry
  • Perform ground based rigging*  [ Tie, dress, set and finish arborist knots ]
  • Recognise trees
  • Assist with aerial rescue from the ground* [ Provide first aid ]
  • Work effectively in the arboriculture industry
  • Perform pruning operations* [ Maintain chainsaws AND Trim and cut felled trees OR Operate a pole saw]
  • Tie, dress, set and finish arborist knots
  • Fall trees manually (basic)
  • Maintain chainsaws
  • Trim and cut felled trees
  • Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher
  • Provide first aid
  • Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
  • Working safely near live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker

​Elective Units

Select at least 4 units from the elective list / An additional 2 units may be selected from the elective list, or this or any other endorsed Training Package or Accredited Course

  • Apply a range of treatments to trees* [Apply chemicals under supervision]
  • Operate and maintain stump grinding machines* [Work effectively in the arboriculture industry]
  • Provide first aid
  • Inspect and clean machinery for plant, animal and soil material
  • Apply chemicals under supervision
  • Install tree protection devices
  • Undertake operational maintenance of machinery
  • Conduct front-end loader operations
  • Plant trees and shrubs
  • Treat weeds
  • Assist with soil or growing media sampling and testing
  • Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices
  • Operate a pole saw
  • Fall trees manually (intermediate)
  • Fall trees manually (advanced)
  • Control traffic with stop-slow bat
  • Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more)
  • Work safely at heights
  • Operate elevated work platforms up to 11 metres
  • Perform EWP rescue
  • Perform EWP controlled descent escape
  • Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

​​Certificate III in Arboriculture

​​Qualification Description

​This qualification provides occupation outcomes with a range of specialised knowledge and skills to undertake skilled work and as a pathway for further learning required for arborists in the arboriculture industry.

Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include the general title Arborist, and the specialisation titles:
  • Climbing Arborist
  • EWP Arborist
  • Ground-based Arborist.
The qualification covers both ground-based workers and those working at heights. This qualification does not require a person to work at heights, however, units that include the skills and knowledge required to work at heights, both from an elevated work platform (EWP) and by climbing trees, are included as elective streams.

Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Specialisation 
select all 4 units from Group B.
select at least 2 units from Group D
the remaining 3 units may be selected from Group D, or from the Prerequisite Requirements list if a unit is a required for packaging the qualification, or from any currently endorsed Training Package or Accredited Course.

Climbing and EWP Specialisation  
select all 6 units from Group C
an additional 3 units may be selected from Group D, or from the Prerequisite Requirements list if a unit is a required for packaging the qualification, or from any currently endorsed Training Package or Accredited Course.

Ground-based outcome without a working-at-height specialisation
select 6 units from Group D or from the Prerequisite Requirements list if a unit is a required for packaging the qualification,

GROUP A

  • Dismantle trees*
  • Undertake aerial rescue*
  • Use advanced climbing techniques*
  • Perform aerial rigging*
  • Use standard climbing techniques to access trees*

GROUP B

  • Dismantle trees*
  • Undertake aerial rescue*
  • Perform aerial rigging*
  • Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more)

GROUP C

  • Implement a tree protection program
  • Prepare and apply chemicals
  • Transport and store chemicals
  • Implement a tree transplanting program
  • Conduct photography for fieldwork
  • Control weeds
  • Work safely at heights
  • Perform dogging
  • Fall trees manually (basic)
  • Fall trees manually (advanced)
  • Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher
  • Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Control traffic with stop-slow bat
